From Kansas City to Tucson via Seattle!

From Kansas City, I traveled to Seattle. My buddy Lorie picked me up at the airport and we headed out to find some dinner! Seattle is a really interesting city and I enjoyed her sharing with me about the various neighborhoods and sights. We went to an awesome Thai restaurant in a really cool part of town near her place. From dinner we headed to her place where I was greeted by her two fabulous cats! I was so shocked by the size of her little girl who looks like a beach ball with fur, a tail and legs. So funny! We talked about the new bike and both of us agreed it was a smart move by Harley. The next day I was graciously taken to the airport on her way to work so I could fly to Tucson!

When I landed in Tucson, I was quickly reminded this was a popular retirement destination. I was surrounded by elderly folks impatiently waiting for their bags and completely oblivious to their rude behavior when they stepped in front of me to wait for their bag. All I could do was laugh when I had to clear them all out of my way when my bag came before theirs’.

On a side note, me the perfectionist had not only forgotten her passport but also her motorcycle registration! I was in a total panic from Kansas City to Seattle as I tried to arrange for one of our crew to dig through my personal files at work to get my registration and then have Jon, my boyfriend, drive out to my house and get my passport…that was the easy part. I then had to get them both to overnight two separate packages to Jerry’s house. (Jerry is my dad’s long time best friend who is graciously keeping my bike safe while it is down here and I am in Alaska.) Unfortunately, Barry reminded me about the passport the night I got to Seattle, which meant my stuff wouldn’t ship until the next morning and wouldn’t arrive until the following day (Thursday) which is when we were leaving at 8am for Mexico! There was no way I would get the stuff in time. Luckily for me, Jerry and Barry have a good pack of pals around here and his friends Mark and Jan offered to pick up my packages at Jerry’s since they were coming to Mexico a day after us. HUGE RELIEF! I am not gonna lie; I was stressed about it until I had my passport in hand! Who knows if I would have been let back in the U.S. without it! (Although I convinced myself that my charm and lack of any criminal history would help my cause if I didn’t have it)

I was greeted by Jerry and his lovely girlfriend Carol when I arrived. They were accommodating and after we had settled in for a minute we all jumped on our bikes and headed to a cool spot called Pub 22 for dinner. It was a mix between a college bar and a restaurant with kegs hanging from the ceiling in a hipster attempt at decorating. We ate, although I was battling “stomach” issues from the stress of the travel and my passport that was hopefully in route! We got home and I realized it got a little cooler at night than I anticipated. I definitely didn’t bring much for riding gear since it was in the 70’s and 80’s during the day! We all went to bed since we had to hit the road at 8am the next morning.

The unveiling of the Harley-Davidson Street 500

Well I have already found a first customer for the new Harley-Davidson Street 500. As I was leaving our meeting in Kansas City to fly to Seattle I met a flight attendant named Carol. She asked me about my Harley shirt and asked if there was something going on, since there were so many Harley shirts on the people getting on the plane. I told her I worked for Harley and that we had a big meeting here to see a new bike they had developed. As soon as I mentioned “entry level” her eyes lit up. She was so excited to see a Harley-Davidson that was 500cc and small enough to learn on. I showed her some pictures and she was hooked! She was already planning out loud when and where she was going to buy one while she was going through the motions of the safety demonstration.

This is who we are building these bikes for! Built right here in Kansas City the new Harley-Davidson Street is sure to please. Inside this light weight motorcycle (480lbs) is a newly designed liquid cooled motor. For those of you familiar with our business, you may recall the Buell Blast. As you also may recall, we have been using the Buell Blast in our Rider’s Edge Program (the riders training program through HD). Well, Buells are no longer being made and our fleets around the country are getting pretty beat up! Harley has been working on this new bike since the day they decided to close down Buell. This bike is truly a Harley. It has a metal tank and fenders, which many of you may notice a lot of the entry level bikes out there are plastic. It looks pretty badass and is really easy to pick up off the kickstand.

The new Street 500 is the new bike for the new HD rider training, now called Harley-Davidson Rider’s Academy. Which is a lot more self explanatory than “Rider’s Edge.” So, we get a great new entry level bike and a great upgrade to the already spectacular education program we were running. 95% of all of the U.S. Dealers were represented at this meeting and I didn’t hear a single negative comment. There were a few constructive criticisms, but it was clear that HD put a lot of time and thought behind this bike. I am excited to be able to offer our customers a bike that can be their first bike and then continue them on the journey with a Harley-Davidson! My favorite quote from this week was a dealer who was comparing Harley with all the other brands and asking why H-D didn’t toot their own horn about being American made. With the new launch of Indian Motorcycles (again!) and the Victory line up, HD has been around continuously the longest building American made motorcycles. He said something like this…”Indian has been running these commercials about people now having a ‘choice’ of American made motorcycles…We have always had a choice! Softail, Dyna, Touring, Sportsterts etc!” What a great point! This is exactly on the point. HD has never given up on designing cool new bikes and offering all of us a choice! And with the new Street we have another choice in our lineup!

My next stop is Seattle to hang out with my good friend Lorie M. from H-D Motor Company. I can’t wait to hear what she has to say, now that she isn’t sworn to silence! Then on my way to Tucson and Mexico!

Ms. Harley-Davidson Alaska – a truly unique competition!

2011 contest, Robin Brandt was crowned Ms Harley-Davidson Alaska 2013

2011 contest, Robin Brandt was crowned Ms Harley-Davidson Alaska 2013

For the past four years we have been holding a truly unique competition right here in Alaska! Initially the idea was from my dad, Barry Matteson. When he came up with the idea of holding a pageant for a lady to be our very own Ms. Harley-Davidson, I was EXTREMELY skeptical! I imagined a bimbo contest with a bunch of trashy girls in bikinis that had absolutely no interest in riding motorcycles. Initially, this is probably what he had in mind too! Fortunately, after some discussion with a couple ladies in the pageant world, I was willing to give it a try, as long as it wasn’t a beauty contest with evening gowns and bikinis. This is a Harley-Davidson dealership in Alaska for cryin out loud!

I worked with a lady I have known for a long time and she helped us develop the application process as well as the fee the participants would pay to play. The fee is $200 and ensures the contestants are serious about the competition and willing to put some skin in the game to ensure they show up for the events and are truly passionate about the competition.

Over the past few years, our wonderful Marketing Director, Sarah Coe has been helping to evolve the competition and really brand it.

You may wonder, why in the hell would we need a Ms. Harley-Davidson Alaska in the first place!? Good question! The primary purpose of this competition is to encourage more women to get involved in the sport of motorcycling and specifically Harley-Davidson. As a female Harley Dealer I am very focused on making sure women feel comfortable coming into the shops and getting engaged in the brand. This competition seeks out women who are not necessarily riders, but interested in the brand and willing to be a representative to other women on our behalf.

2012 Contestants

2012 Contestants

Since this is a unique Alaskan competition it is nothing like a pageant…I made sure of that! We generally have about 4 events that the ladies participate in. Each stage of the competition is judged by secret judges as well as points earned by people’s choice or performance. The first competition this year was the Trivia Contest. This is always fun, we give the girls a bunch of reading materials then have multiple choice questions for them to answer in a game show style setup.

The girls are in the hot seat during the trivia contest!

They earn points for the questions they answer correctly as well as points from the secret judges based on their qualities to be a good representative of our company. The next competition is the Chili Cook Off and Bavarian Costume Competition! Oh yes, this is as crazy as it sounds. Each of the contestants makes chili that is sampled and voted on by the public during out Biketoberfest Event. They also each create or buy a “Bavarian” costume (think St. Pauli Girl – with some HD influence). We have seen some serious creativity over the years from the girls in this competition.

The next event is a “sales” competition. Each of the girls works for me for a day during Small Business Saturday after Thanksgiving. They are awarded points for the merchandise they sell. We focus on clothing and collectibles as well as some accessories for motorcycles.

The final event is probably the most intimidating, a speech. This is an opportunity for the girls to talk about how they got into motorcycling and why they would make a great Ms. HD AK.

Although it is a serious competition, it is pretty fun and we have found that the girls usually end up being the best cheerleaders for each other.  If you would have told me we would have this much fun and get so many great women involved when we first started this I would probably have never believed you!

Walk a Mile

Last year Harley-Davidson Motor Company launched a program entitled “Walk a Mile.” This was an initiative from the Motor Company to improve the relationship between the dealers and the Motor Co. H-D is focused on always improving their business and they were finally beginning to realize they needed to understand the retail side of their business a little better. The program is pretty simple, a dealer applies to participate and H-D sends and executive from the Motor Company to work for the dealer for 3 days. This is a hands on experience for that executive to learn how the retail side of the business works, and how decisions and programs from the Motor Co can affect the other side of the business. It is a great opportunity for both the dealer and the executive to learn from each other and earn a greater understanding of the business as a whole. The reality is, without both sides of the company H-D wouldn’t exist.

I waited a little while, but finally decided it would be a good time to have someone from HD corporate to visit our dealerships in Alaska. I love to learn and I am eager to see what this experience will bring. We have an executive coming from Milwaukee next week to work in my Anchorage store for a few days. His name is Fred and his job title is “Manager, Organizational Development.” He has been with the Motor Co. for one and a half years. He describes his job like this “I work with the P&A, GM and Dealer Services groups helping to define/align their strategies to support the dealer network and our customers.” I spoke with him on the phone and shared the history of our business including the fun story of how Barry got into the motorcycle business. He was pretty easy to talk to and offered to met up with me while I was in Milwaukee for the 110th. Unfortunately we were unable to meet up in Milwaukee with all the parties we just didn’t cross paths.

This program is really pretty cool when you think about it. I am pretty sure no other motorcycle manufacturer is as invested in their dealer network like H-D is. For the last several years H-D has come leaps and bounds forward in their relations with their dealers. The openness and willingness to learn starts from the top, and having executives who are actively learning from the dealer network on how they can improve the company as a whole is truly remarkable. I can’t say that I have agreed with all the choices the Motor Co. has made, but I can say over the past couple of years I have felt a shift in the attitudes of the Motor Company staff. They definitely focus more on how they can assist the dealers and improve their business. The reality is, without the dealer network bikes wouldn’t get sold and relationships wouldn’t be built with the riders.

I am still not sure what all Fred will do while he is here, but it will probably be a little bit of everything. I will have him working the counters as well as with the staff on inventory, merchandising, service, sales etc. If you are around next week Thursday through Saturday be sure to stop by and meet Fred. I am sure a few of my regulars will be able to give him a hard time. Hopefully I will have a lot of great insights to share after his visit! Until then, get out and enjoy what we have left of sunny days!

Rogue Riders Journey Days 12 & 13: August 27-28, 2013 – Siuox Falls to Lacrosse and Lacrosse to Milwaukee

Day 12

Our ride to Lacrosse was a short one, we were all able to get settled into the hotel nice and early and get out of the heat. Along the way into Lacrosse we stopped at Glendale HD, where we got to see one of the new liquid cooled setups on the Triglide.

On the road to Milwaukee

On the road to Milwaukee

The closer we got to Milwaukee the more riders we saw on the road. Our hotel was not expecting so many bikers to fill up their bar and restaurant.

day 12

We had almost all of the Rogue Riders in there as well as bikers from all over even Australia!

day 12 #2

We all had a good time sharing our adventures from the trip and catching up with those who didn’t ride in the same groups.

day 12 #3

Our group has grown by a few new people, including Will Smith from Soldotna and a few others.

day 12 #4

Day 13

Today, we all met in the parking lot at 9am and were led by some of the folks from H-D.

We arrived there at noon and decided to regroup at 2pm to ride together to the HD Museum for our official group photo!

The dealership is partying through the weekend are equipped with two stages for concerts and probably 20 food and drink vendors plus another 30 plus other vendors. The store had been completely cleared out of motorcycles and was stocked full of apparel and P&A. It was crazy how much stuff they had, I even ended up buying a leather jacket and a shirt. Julie scored a pair of heated boots…if you saw the photo on facebook, her bike is completely packed!

We all milled around, ate and tried to find some shade. Right at 2pm it was kickstands up and we rode to the Museum. It was pretty cool to see all the bikes together in a row riding down the road. We got to the Museum and parked the bikes. We walked over to the rivets (Chrome caps that are engraved and placed around benches on the grounds outside the museum) that we bought for House of Harley and Alaska HOG Chapter so we could locate them and get our group photo.

Some of us are all staying at the same hotel, and hopefully we will all run into each other throughout the weekend. There is so much going on this weekend, and the kick off is tomorrow. This will be the last blog I write for the trip since we will all be on our own from this point forward. So, check out our facebook page, I will try to upload some photos of the happenings and of course there are a lot of updates on the H-D facebook page. Thanks for joining us on our blog to follow our journey. It has been an epic trip and we really couldn’t have asked for a better travel experience. We had great weather and made a lot of really good memories. We will be riding down again for the 115th Anniversary Party, so maybe you will get to join us next time! Alaska Rogue Riders made it to Milwaukee all safely and with a lot of great road tales to share. Rogue Riders Journey Day 11: August 26, 2013 – Sturgis SD to Sioux Falls SD

photo2

Today was by far the hottest day of the trip. Last night we all planned on leaving by 8am so we could try to beat some of the heat. Sherri and Lee wanted to go see Mount Rushmore, so they left around 7:30 and went on their own.

photo3

We were originally going to ride with Taren and all the folks that met up with her in Sturgis from Wisconsin.

I got Howard back for buying me the horse by zip tying it to his bike when he wasn't looking! :D now we will pass the pony...I wonder who will get it next

I got Howard back for buying me the horse by zip tying it to his bike when he wasn’t looking! 😀 now we will pass the pony…I wonder who will get it next

photo6

However, their breakfast was running late, and I had to be to the store early so I could get squeezed in for an oil change. So, Paul, Barry and I headed out. Pretty much everyone in the group had planned on riding the bad lands, and most of them did. Since I had seen it last time I came through and I was in a hurry we opted to skip it this trip.

Only scenery was some sunflower fields!

Only scenery was some sunflower fields!

We hit the road and stopped for gas and a quick bite of food for Paul and Barry in Wall. For anyone who isn’t familiar with “Wall Drug” it is a giant tourist trap.

photo4

I am not really sure what the origination was, but it is a a few blocks of shops, and stores all connected in what looks like an old western town. Tourists flock here for collectibles and other random goodies, including a shirt from Badlands Harley-Davidson.

photo5

It was already getting hot, and we hit the highway at warp speed. As Barry’s itinerary said “Rogue Riders Fast and Furious on the Freeway!” Paul had to pull over to use the bathroom so he waved us on and said he would catch up. I had been told by the service department that I had to be to the shop no later than 3:30pm. It was really getting hot, and by the time we finally pulled over in Chamberlin I was seriously getting dehydrated. I bought two bottles of water and downed one while we cooled off. The second I kept in my lap during the rest of the ride so I could stay hydrated. It is really difficult to ride in heat like this. You want to ride in a tank top but it is easy to get dehydrated even more quickly when the wind is wicking all your sweat away. Barry said I needed a long sleeve white shirt and lots of water.

From what I heard from the other riders tonight during our reception and J&L Harley-Davidson they too had a hard time with all the heat. J&L H-D was able to get both my dad’s and my bike in for their services. They even loaned us their truck so we could drive to the hotel to cool off and settle in before the party!

We got back to the shop and others in our group were all gathering. We got quite the spread, steak sandwiches, brats, fresh sweet corn, potato salad and coleslaw! Plus free drinks, we were all very happy and fed. A really cool addition to the party was the surprise appearance by my dad’s old friend Roger. I met Roger and his wife when I was driving with my dad down to South Carolina in 2004 for College. He used to live in Alaska and had bought a bike or two from Barry. A cool old guy with some fun stories from back in the day. He still has some of his original patches on his denim vest from the 70’s and 80’s including a “Barry’s Custom Cycles” patch!

Original Barry's Custom Cycle patch!

So cool to see him and get to catch up. The crazy part of the whole thing, while I was riding through this hot desert of fields today, Roger crossed my mind and I was wondering how he was. Then I walk out to get some food and there he is! It was a blessing to see him again. He is going to send me a  patch he made of his wife when she passed a couple years ago with her back in the 80’s modeling some HD gear Barry gave her, she was his first model of HD gear he ever had at the dealership. Pretty cool to talk to a guy who was there in the beginning with my dad. We will be getting an early start tomorrow again so we can try to avoid the heat. It is a bit shorter of a ride tomorrow. We will also be joined by Lady Road Dog who is working on riding her tricked out Street Glide to every HD dealer in the country!

Lady Road Dog finally met up with us.

Rogue Riders Journey Day 10: August 25, 2013 – Hanging out in Sturgis SD

What a fabulous day! This was our day for “relaxation” a break from the road…however almost everyone found somewhere to ride to! Lorie M from HD had to head out this morning and continue her journey to Milwaukee, since she works for HD she has to be there before the party. This year she is in charge of the Motor Company’s FREE roadside assistance program. They literally will pick up any H-D rider during the 110th party in Milwaukee and get them to the nearest dealer with the least amount of wait time to repair their bike if they break down. How is that for customer service?! (I bet even the “nicest” people don’t offer that service…aka Honda riders)

Everyone was a little slower moving this morning, and as the hours ticked on more and more bikes left. Paul told me he wanted to ride with me in Spearfish Canyon, and Barry said he didn’t want to go. They decided we would all ride to Deadwood, then Paul and I would ride in the canyon.

Gotta watch out for this shit!

Gotta watch out for this shit!

The whole time, Barry kept telling me how long and slow the ride would be. I didn’t mind, beats sitting around all day! For those that didn’t know it was my birthday today. So, I figured I may as well go for a ride.

Veil falls in spearfish canyon during my ride today

We rode to Deadwood, and walked around for a few minutes with Barry then Paul and I headed out on our ride. It was a pretty ride, but after the amazing scenery we had seen yesterday it just wasn’t as exciting!

Downtown deadwood

Paul and I had a nice leisurely ride but it was much shorter than we planned.

I was ok with that, since I was still pretty tired from yesterday and thought it would be a good time for a nap!

Horsing around deadwood

So we headed back to the hotel and I decided to shower and relax. Right before 5pm Barry called my room and told me he was hungry. I suggested we go to Deadwood for dinner since there isn’t much going on in Sturgis now that the party is over. Reluctantly he agreed but told me the New Jersey crew wanted to buy me a drink here first. I guess I forgot to mention them in my blog from last night. They are 3 guys from NJ who are here celebrating one of their retirement. And like most NJ guys, they are loud and entertaining! Lorie and I met them last night in the bar when we ate dinner and Barry met them after we did. They were staying in the room above ours, and the young guy in their group even offered to wash Barry’s bike…see picture.

So, when Barry told me we were gonna meet them for a drink then ride to dinner I thought it sounded like a plan. I decided I would put on some makeup and clean clothes since I might take a “self photo” for facebook at dinner later. Prior to going to get our drinks I was texting and telling anyone from our crew that I was going to go to Deadwood for dinner and that they should join me. When we got in the bar Paul was in the back corner, and said they were all back there. I figured the Jersey boys were playing pool or something. As I walked around the corner much to my surprise the ENTIRE Rogue Rider group was there yelling “Happy Birthday!”

The whole group together for my bday!

The whole group together for my bday!

I was seriously the most surprised I have ever been. I don’t think I have ever had a surprise birthday where I was so oblivious! I had no idea, it was amazing!

photo (1)

Then I found out they had all known for the entire ride that this was planned and had somehow managed to keep it a secret! I am pretty perceptive so that was a challenge in itself! My dad was so awesome, he arranged in advance with the hotel, got a cake made locally and delivered with balloons and had the whole party and day planned without me knowing!

How did they manage a full sheet cake on Harleys!?

How did they manage a full sheet cake on Harleys!?

It really touched my heart, I love my dad but this is the most I can ever remember him doing for something like this. It was all really special.

What made it even more awesome was to be on the road with such a great group of people and for all of them to take time out of their night to come celebrate with me!

During dinner, a lady came in and told us her mother “Corky” was turning 92 today! Corky has been serving the free breakfast at the Presbyterian Church in town to all the Sturgis bikers for years and her daughter thought it would be cool if a bunch of bikers would sing her Happy Birthday!

Rogue Riders Journey Day 9: August 24, 2013 – Billings Montana to Sturgis South Dakota

Hotel in Billings

Hotel in Billings

Morning Barry :)

Morning Barry 🙂

After our awesome evening in Billings, Lorie and I decided we would take a more scenic route to Sturgis by way of the Beartooth Pass and Big Horn Pass. Lorie had done this ride years ago and was confident it would be both beautiful and fun.

Morning!

Morning!

We got up early and were on the bikes just before 8am. Paul had showed some interest in going this route as well, but was unsure since it was quite a ways out of the way. Now is a good time to get our your HOG touring book and check out the route we took….

Casino in Redlodge MT

To start the day, we went backwards (West) and down into Red Lodge. We visited the H-D shop there and I was able to meet Barry Usher’s wife Anne Marie. We chatted for a bit, while I picked up a T-shirt to commemorate our journey over the Beartooth Pass.

Beartooth H-D

Beartooth H-D

While we were here, we added all our layers, Lorie even put on her heated gear. I couldn’t imagine it being THAT cold, so I kept my half helmet on and put on my leather bandana. The road through the pass is some of the most technical riding I have ever done.

Beginning of the Beartooth

Beginning of the Beartooth

It isn’t very far in distance, probably only 70 miles or so, but it is all tight curves, grades up and down, as well as a ton of switchbacks. While we were cruising along, I was wishing I had my Buell for this leg as it would be the perfect bike for those corners. In the pass you go up to 10,947 feet!

Climbing the Beartooth!

It was definitely cold up there but was the most spectacular view. We stopped for some photos along the way but they really don’t do it justice.

While going over the pass, you cross from Montana to Wyoming. We were in the north western portion of Wyoming, and had to make it all the way across the state and to South Dakota. We also took the “Chief Joseph” Scenic Highway from The Beartooth into Cody.

By the time we got to Cody we realized how long of a day it was going to be. That didn’t stop us though! From here I sent a text message to Barry telling him our ride was a lot longer than we expected and we would be late getting in. His response was that they had also taken the pass and would be coming in after us and to pick him up some beer!

So, Paul, Barry, Sherri, Lee, Taren and Howard all made the same trip as Lorie and I. From Cody, we decided to take the route through Sheridan which took us on 14 through the Big Horn Pass.

There is a 14A route as well which we heard was pretty, but even more technical than 14 and we knew we didn’t have the time. The Big horn was also a climb up the mountain and had a lot of tight turns, grades, and switchbacks and I had a blast! I love riding the curves and getting those bikes leaned as far as we can. It was beautiful scenery, but we were way behind so we didn’t stop to take pictures. This is all definitely riding I would recommend, but next time I would like to take a couple days and stay in Red Lodge and Cody and hit Yellowstone while we are over here.

Guess I will add it to my future trips, which I will have a bike down in the states now so I will make it happen! There were a lot of flat areas between the Beartooth and Big Horn, it really is interesting how diverse the landscape is.

When we finally got to Sheridan, I was shocked to see we still had another 220 miles to go! So, we filled up the bikes and hit I-90. We paced around 80 mph the whole way, with Lorie somehow able to drink water and eat 80mph M&M’s! It was a long haul and most of the road was flat, but we managed to make it to our hotel in Sturgis at 8:05pm.

So, that was some of the most scenic riding, but it was a total of 550 miles and 12 hours and 5 minutes! By the time we got to the hotel, we both were too tired to ride to find food so we settled for “Caddy’s” attached to the hotel. Food was ok and there were some other bikers we got to tell some stories to from our rides. I had a glass of wine and hit the hay! Originally I had planned on celebrating my birthday tonight so we would all be able to sleep in on Sunday, but with all the crew taking the long way, Barry and the rest of them didn’t even make it in until 10pm! So, we will see what my actual birthday day brings, I might end up riding a little but mostly I will be trying to relax!

Rogue Riders Journey Day 8: August 23, 2013 – Kalispell to Billings Montana

Flat Head Lake

Flat Head Lake

Today was my first day not riding with a group of at least 5 or 6 bikes and was our longest day of the trip, a whopping 450 miles. Lorie (My HD Rep) and I decided to have a little friend time and go our own way. Originally we had planned on going back on the “Going to the Sun Road” through Glacier National Park (The same road I did yesterday) but after reviewing the maps we discovered it would be at least an 11 hour day. So, we opted to take a more scenic route to Billings than just staying on the freeway the whole time. We got up a little earlier and were loaded up and ready to go by 8. Which was easy for the two of us. A few others from the group were doing the same as us and taking their own routes rather than riding in a big group.

Lorie and I decided we would take 93 South, to the highway then get on to 12 East to Helena. I have never been to the capital and it looked like a pretty ride. We set our early and stopped for gas a few miles down the road so we would both have a full tank. We are both on blue street glides, so we make quite a pair! Highway 93 was beautiful, it winded around a lake and through some hills and forest. There is a lot of smoke in the air from the wildfires, so the sun was a bright pinkish orange color and was reflecting off the lake. We stopped at Grizzly Harley-Davidson in Missoula for a bathroom break and to stretch our legs.

It was a smaller store with friendly staff that all said hello and greeted you. I think my favorite part of the ride was the road leading into Helena, highway 12. It was a beautiful road in good condition with great curves and very little traffic.

We stopped in Helena and after finding the historic downtown area we found a little place called Taco Del Sol and had some Mexican food (for those that know me, it wasn’t the nasty greasy kind, it was fresh and healthy).

From here we got back onto 12 to continue our journey towards Billings. While on the road, I noticed the grey truck up the road start to brake for something. I figured it must be wildlife and as we got closer I could seem something big and fluffy rambling in front of the truck. It took me a minute to figure out what the hell it was, then it turned and stopped on the side of the road. It was a lama! It stared at me as I rode by and Lorie and I both threw our hands up and shrugged our shoulders! What are the odds of a random lama running down the road!

While we were riding on 12 we could see all these thunder storms around us. My GPS said to go down 89, so we made that turn. As we started down that road, we could see it was taking us towards a very dark grey cloud with lightning!

As we got closer, I pulled over so I could put my full face helmet back on and my rain gear. Lorie, was very quick getting her gear on and had to wait at least 5 minutes for me to put my half helmet and glasses away, get out my full face, get out my rain gear, then sit on the side of the road trying to put it on over my boots….fail!

Anyhow, by the time I got all the gear on the storm had move to our left quite a bit and we didn’t end up getting any rain hardly except for the water left on the road! We both ended up sweating in our rain gear until we found the next gas station, which was perfect timing. We were back on I 90. I knew the group had mostly taken I-90 the whole way, and behind where we got on was nothing but black clouds. So, they must have been stuck in that is what Lorie and I assumed. We made it the rest of the way to Beartooth Harley-Davidson without any rain. We arrived at 5:30 and the only other riders that made it there that early were Glen and Cherrie who had also rode on their own today. We were greeted by all the awesome staff at Beartooth and they were so accommodating. I asked if I could pay for a wash, and they told me to unload my bike and they would take care of it! Then I asked if I could get a couple of flat rate boxes to mail some stuff home, Guy helped me out and got two boxes of my cold weather gear shipped home for me! THEY ROCK! And last but not least, Collette, their marketing manager, put together an awesome party just for us!

They had the store open from 6pm to 9pm just for us and invited some of their local riders to join us. They had an awesome spread from “Famous Dave’s BBQ”, beer, water, soda etc. They even had staff working so we could shop, and a tech on hand to fix what needed to be fixed! He replaced Taren’s brake pads, which were gone basically and Sherry Newel’s headlight that had taken a rock and was all busted up! Collette, was running around like crazy, she was basically waiting on everyone, I have never met someone who worked so hard! I seriously cannot say enough to thank them, including their Dealer Principal Barry Usher. What a great team, if you are ever in the area they are the dealer to visit!

On a final note, pretty much everyone else in our crew were stuck in that severe storm Lorie and I saw when we got on I-90. I guess it was pretty bad and they had a lot of it which made for a slow day. Despite their late arrival, Collette and the team at Beartooth hung around and kept everything going until everyone was taken care of. Big thanks and shoutout to Beartooth H-D and their crew. Tomorrow we are riding to Sturgis, South Dakota!!!
